International Window Film Association
Architectural Visual Inspection Standard for Applied Window Film, as adopted by the IWFA May 15, 1999. Criteria apply to installed film — not defects inherent in the glass.
Inspection basics
- View at right angles from the room side, ≥ 6 feet (2 m)
- Natural daylight, not direct sunlight
- Assess the normal vision area excluding a 2" (50 mm) perimeter band
- Effects during cure (water bubbles, distortion, haze) are not defects
- Acceptable if dirt, fibers, gels, fingerprints, air bubbles, scores, distortion, creases, edge lift, nicks, and tears are unobtrusive
Edges & splices
Edge gaps are normally 1/32–1/16" (1–4 mm) so water can exit and film does not lift on the frame. Thicker safety films allow slightly larger gaps. Splice gaps should stay within ~1/64" (1 mm); butt joints or overlaps are allowed when the line is straight.
